Racer Ready, GO!

4th Annual Hometown Races were a success last weekend! The fun races produced by McCall Winter Sports Club and hosted at Brundage Mountain were moved up earlier in the season this year to get the athletes in the race mindset prior to their first USSA sanctioned races happening this coming weekend. At the same time, we wanted the athletes to have fun without the stress of knowing the races would count towards their individual season points. For some, this was their first race ever. Having the team component also took the pressure off.

There were 2 events. Teams of 3 competed in the "Badger Wiggle" which was a skier-cross-type course that the athletes and coaches built the day before during the All Mountain Holiday Camp; including tight, banked turns, rollers and an optional jump. Each racer ran the course twice. Each racer's best time was then used to sum the team's total time and determine the winning team.

The second event was the Dual GS where athletes competed head-to-head. This was a round-robin format with double-elimination The first racer to cross the finish line of the course set MWSC U14, U10 and U12 Coaches earned a point for their team. Best 2 of 3 runs was a win for the team.

Then an overall team winner was determined for each of the 3 divisions.

After the races there was an Apres Party at the club's Alpine Race Center(ARC) at Brundage Mountain during which race results were announced.  A special guest of McCall Winter Sports Club was Bob Greenwood (92 of Greenwoods Ski Haus, Boise) in whose honor 2 athlete scholarships were awarded.  Accompanying Bob was his wife Dottie, and Bogus Basin Ski Club Members Michael and Julie Bouton, Barb and Donn Bryant, and Jim and Kim Hovren. The scholarship money was generated at the Little Ski Hill's Snowball event in December at which a 3-day, 3-night Utah Ski Package for two was auctioned off.  Bogus Basin Ski Club put the Utah Ski Package together. Josie Leslie, U12 Alpine Racer, and Aiden McLean, Pro Track Skier were each awarded a scholarship as nominated by their coaches.  Both athletes demonstrate a passion for skiing and the opportunities the sport presents to progress as an athlete and grow to be a model teammate and citizen.
